Tim Pemantau Satwa liar dari Yayasan SCORPION melakukan pemantauan terhadap perburuan dan konflik satwa liar di desa Muara Sibuntuon, Kecamatan Sibabangun, Kabupaten Tapanuli Tengah, Sumatera. Daerah ini merupakan bagian barat dari Ekosistem Batang Toru, habitat alami kera besar paling terancam punah Pongo tapanuliensis.

Pada kunjungan di hari Minggu (20/20), tim menjumpai beberapa masyarakat lokal untuk menguatkan temuan informasi yang telah dihimpun sebelumnya. Menurut keterangan Pak Aromazo Telambanua, salah satu masyarakat lokal di Muara Sibuntuon, orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis), satwa endemik di wilayah ini, sangat jarang terlihat dan menggangu area permukiman. Bapak Telambanua juga menyampaikan bahwa orangutan hanya bisa dijumpai didalam hutan yang berjarak 10-15 km dari desa.

Selain menghimpun informasi terkait orangutan, tim SCORPION juga melihat ada beberapa masyarakat yang memelihara jenis burung pengicau di depan rumah mereka, yang diyakini ditangkap di wilayah tersebut. Selain itu, menurut keterangan Pak Telambanua, perburuan rusa (Rusa unicolor), salah satu satwa dilindungi, juga terjadi di wilayah ini untuk dikonsumsi dan diperdagangkan.

The Wildlife Monitoring Team from SCORPION Foundation monitors poaching and wildlife conflicts in Muara Sibuntuon village, Sibabangun District, Central Tapanuli Regency, Sumatra. This area is the western part of the Batang Toru Ecosystem, the natural habitat of the most critically endangered great ape -Pongo tapanuliensis.

On a visit on Sunday (20/20), the team met with several local communities to corroborate the findings of previously gathered information. According to Mr. Aromazo Telambanua, one of the local people in Muara Sibuntuon, orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis), endemic animals in this region, are very rarely seen and disturb residential areas. Mr. Telambanua also said that orangutans can only be found in forests 10-15 km from the village.

In addition to gathering information related to orangutans, the SCORPION team also noticed that there are several communities keeping a type of bird in front of their homes, which is believed to be captured in the area. In addition, according to Mr. Telambanua, deer hunting (Rusa unicolor), one of the protected animals, also occurs in this region for consumption and trade.
