The Wildlife Authority (BBKSDA SU), SCORPION and local communities put up a signpost for Crocodile Prone Areas around Lake Siais - Rianiate, South Tapanuli Regency, Sumatra (19/12).
This is done to prevent conflicts between wildlife and the community as well as to prevent efforts to hunt crocodiles in this area, especially trading them illegally.
Warning signs were installed in 6 places where crocodiles were suspected, especially in swampy areas. Last November, a crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), which is one of the protected species, was trapped in the community's fishing net. A few days after that, the crocodile was reportedly dead. Therefore, increasing public awareness of the importance of protecting the ecosystem needs to be done, even during the Covid-19 pandemic.
