Three gibbons, consist of two Siamang gibbons (Symphalangus syndactylus) and one white-handed gibbon (Hylobates agilis) were released in the
wild in Sipirok forest in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra province yesterday (Friday,
23/09/206). Prior the release, these three animals received training from the
Sumatran Rainforest Institute (SRI) in Panyabungan, Mandailing Natal regency,
North Sumatra Province.
The release of the three animals were done by the Wildlife Authority (BBKSDA)
in North Sumatra together with SRI and Yayasan Orangutan Sumatra Lestari (YOSL),
and with support of funds from Scorpion Foundation and Indika Energy.
One of the three animals, a 5-year-old female gibbon (name Abon), confiscated
in Medan earlier this year. Following the confiscation, Scorpion Foundation and
Forestry Police Rapid Response Unit (SPORC) translocated Abon to SRI animal
transit centre in Panyabungan last March.
Another gibbon is a 5 years old male (named Boim). He was confiscated last
year and then went to the Animal Transit Center of SRI for health care and
training.
The third animal released yesterday is a 5 years old White handed gibbon
(Hylobates agilis), named Kuning, confiscated
last year.
In addition to these 3 animals, there are also 10 other rare animals still in the process of training and treatment by SRI in Panyabungan and being prepared for translocation to Kalaweit Animal Rescue Center for additional training before being released into the wild.
