Scorpion Urges Wildlife Authority in Bengkulu to End Cruelty to Animals (September 15, 2016)
Posted on 00:07 September 16th, 2016

Scorpion Foundation again urges the Wildlife Authority (BKSDA) in Bengkulu, Sumatra, via a letter today (15/09/2016) to end cruelty to animals in Bengkulu Wildlife Park by providing advice and guidance to the park management. Carbon copies of the letter also sent to Director of Biodiversity Conservation at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and to the Head of Tourism Department at the Bengkulu city government.

Handling of wildlife in this park is terrible. Scorpion investigator visited the park on 13 September 2016 and found terrible conditions of the animals in the park. There was a lot of garbage inside wildlife enclosures, such as in the enclosures of long-tailed macaque and pig-tailed macaque.

Water tubs inside the animal enclosures had no water but instead were filled in with garbage. Keeping wildlife without drinking water available at all times is a form of animal cruelty.

Early this year, the Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN) also uploaded on its website a report entitled “SAVE THE ANIMALS AT ‘WORLDS WORST ZOO’.”

“No food or water. Solitary confinement. Choking on garbage. That’s the reality for animals at Bengkulu Zoo!” the report says.

Bengkulu Zoo (Taman Satwa Bengkulu) located in Sumatra, due to its notoriously cruel ways of treating their animals, has quite quickly become the infamous ‘World’s Worst Zoo’, and for good reason.

“Animals that are imprisoned at Bengkulu Zoo are left for days with no food or water. Many have been found chocking on garbage as their cages become nothing but garbage bins! Many are left alone, depressed with no mental stimulation. Some animals are even chained, within their already small cages!” the report says.

The long tailed macaques and pig-tailed macaques have no water ready 24/7, and their enclosures were dirty.
