A Protected Eagle (Spilornis cheela) is Prevented from Becoming a Victim of Trafficking (December 01, 2020)
Posted on 06:11 December 06th, 2020

Wildlife authority (BBKDA SU) rescued a protected species of eagle (Spilornis cheela) on Jalan FL. Tobing, Medan City, North Sumatra Province (01/12). This information comes from reports from a local resident, Mr. Surya, who was offered by someone who intended to sell the bird. Mr. Surya suspects that the bird is a protected species that is prohibited from being traded. Therefore, he reported it to the authority.

After finding the report, a joint team consisting of field staff from BBKSDA SU - SKW II and from the SCORPION Foundation visited Mr. Surya's place to investigate this case. The BBKSDA SU staffs confirmed that this bird is a protected species, should not be traded. Unfortunately, the team did not find the bird seller. Furthermore, Mr. Surya handed over the bird, a Crested serpent eagle, as evidence to the team. After making the submission report, in the evening, the team took the bird to Wildlife Rescue Center in Sibolangit for rehabilitation and will be released back into the wild when it is ready.

The team really appreciates Mr. Surya for being willing to report the alleged illegal animal trade activity. This shows that there is an increase and public trust in wildlife protection towards the authorities. In February, the SCORPION team and BBKSDA also handled a similar case where the illegal ownership of this protected species was reported by the local resident to authority (Link).

Otoritas Satwa Liar (BBKDA SU) berhasil menyelamatkan spesies burung elang dilindungi (Spilornis cheela) di Jalan FL. Tobing, Kota Medan, Provinsi Sumatera Utara (01/12).
