A joint team consist of three forestry policemen from the Gunung Leuser N.P Authority and two field staff from the Scorpion Foundation carried out a joint patrol activity for two days (08-09 July 2020) in around Kutambaru, Langkat Regency of North Sumatra (Marike area of GLNP). This patrol aims to monitor the circulation of wild animals that might be captured from the GLNP area.
On July 8, 2020, the patrol team found a black eagle (Ictinaetus malaiensis) was kept in front of a local villager's house. The eagle was kept cruelly. Because of the black eagle is protected by Indonesian law, then the GLNP Authority helped to confiscates the eagle from the owner. After confiscation, the eagle was taken to the GLNP Authority office in Bukit Lawang for a medical check up.
On the next day, the patrol team continued to monitor and found that many suffering monkeys were captured by the local community to be kept as pet. The patrol team considers this to be animal cruelty. At least, three wild monkey (Macaca nemestrina) found by patrol team. The wild monkeys were confined in dirty cages without access to drinking water 24/7. This is a violation of the 5 freedoms of animals.
