Scorpion and Partners Rescue Pangolin in Sibolangit, Sumatra (Nov. 20, 2016)
Posted on 11:16 November 21st, 2016

Scorpion Foundation along with its partners in Sumatra rescued a pangolin in Sibolangit, Deli Serdang regency of North Sumatra province on Sunday (20th of November 2016. The pangolin was illegally captured and kept at home by a local farmer in Sibolangit for a few days before Scorpion, ISCP and Wildlife Authority (BBKSDA) in North Sumatra took this rare animal from the farmer.

Finding of this illegally captured animal is the result of a joint investigation by Scorpion Foundation and the ISCP. Scorpion and ISCP told the owner that the pangolin was a protected animal. Keeping, transporting or capturing of this animal can be sentenced to five years in prison and a fine of 100 million rupiah (US$7,400).

Because the pangolin kept at the farmer’s home for only a few days and still wild, Scorpion and ICSP requested to BBKSDA to immediately release it to the wild habitat.

Last month, Scorpion investigation of pangolin trade resulted in the arrest a trader and confiscation of 200 kg of frozen pangolin in Borneo.
