Awareness Campaign for Protection of Tapanuli Orangutan through Islamic Lectures at Istiqomah Mosque in Arse, South Tapanuli (July 24, 2020)

Scorpion Foundation field staff approached an Islamic ulema Mr. Arpan to cooperate in awareness campaign for Tapanuli orangutan. It was agreed that Arpan would include Tapanuli orangutan issue in his Friday prayer speech which was held on the 24th of July 2020 in Istiqomah Mosque, Arse Nauli Village, Arse subdistrict of South Tapanuli, Sumatra.

Through his speech, Ustad Arpan said to his audience that Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) issued Fatwa No. 04 Year 2014 concerning animal conservation measures to maintain the balance of the ecosystem. He also asked his audience to help government effort to protect the important animals which lived around them as effort to maintain the balance of the ecosystem, including birds as seed dispersers and also Orangutans. Approximately 30 people attended this Friday event. Arse Nauli village locates near the border of Dolok Sipirok Nature Reserve-the habitat of the Tapanuli orangutan.
