Thousands of birds
sent illegally from Bengkulu (Sumatrra) to Jakarta every month. The birds include from
species of Enggano White-eye (Zosterops
salvadorii), Oriental white-eye (Zosterops
palpebrosus), Asian glossy starling
(Aplonis panayensis) and hanging parrot (Loriculus). Senior Investigator of Scorpion Foundation, Marison
Guciano, told Kompas.com, the birds are smuggled to Jakarta via public bus,
courier service, and private cars.
According to
Marison, the process of packing and transportation of birds always cause many
deaths. The birds are taken directly from th forest in Bengkulu province
including from Enggano island, Curup, and from North Bengkulu.
" Enggano
White-eyes are captured in Enggano island because it an endemic species of this island.
Oriental white-eyes are captured in Curup while hanging
parrots are taken from North Bengkulu," Marison told
Kompas.com Saturday (7th of May 2016).
Price of Enggano white-eye in
Bengkkulu is IDR30,000 (GBP1.5)/ bird while in Jakata the price is between IDR80,000
(GBP4) to IDR100.000 (GBP5) per bird.
Oriental white-eye is on sale
at the price of IDR8.000 (GBP0.4) per bird while Asian glossy starling is on
sale at the price of IDR40.000 (GBP2) per bird, and Hanging parrot is on sale
at the price of IDR35.000 (GBP1,75) per bird.
