On the roadsides of KH
Alwi Ahmad Shahab Street in Jambi city, Jambi province, there are six shops
selling wildlife mostly birds. Scorpion Investigator visited this wildlife
market on Sunday (22 May 2016) and found approximately 3,000 birds on sale in
this market.
Scorpion also talked to the bird traders and asked if the birds they received in this market equipped with transport permit. No one of the traders said having the permit. “Dealers and hunters just brought the birds to this market without any permit and we bought the birds from them,” a shop owner told Scorpion.
Ministry of Forestry Regulation No. 447/Kpts-II/2003 concerning
administration directive of harvest or capture and distribution of the
specimens of wild plant and animal species (Article 61) states; “All
and any activities of domestic commercial distribution shall be covered by
Permit for Domestic Transport of Wild Plants and Animals (SATS-DN).”
Because the birds on sale in Jambi wildlife market are not covered by SATS-DN, these animals are illegal. The natural resources conservation agency (BKSDA) in Jambi is hoped to control the illegal birds in Jambi markets to avoid disappearing of many of the Indonesian birds.
