Scorpion Foundation urged the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) to tighten control of dolphins throughout Indonesia. In a letter submitted to MoEF Wednesday (3rd of February 2016), Scorpion requested that Director of Biodiversity Conservation of the MoEF notify all BKSDA offices in Indonesia that capture and possession of dolphins without permit is illegal.
Scorpion also requested that the Directorate of Biodiversity Conservation notify all BKSDA offices to campaign so that any dolphins accidentally caught in fisherman's nets must be released immediately back into the sea.
In the letter, Scorpion also requested that the government issue a ban on export of dolphins.
A number of companies in Indonesia allegedly had dolphins for commercial purposes. They are: PT Pembangunan Jaya Ancol, Taman Safari Indonesia – Bogor, Taman Safari Indonesia – Prigen, Taman Safari Indonesia – Pusat Lumba-Lumba Batang (this is where they take in freshly caught dolphins and train them), Taman Safari Indonesia - Marine Park Bali (dolphin show to be opened here), Wersut Seguni Indonesia (Central Java province), Melka Hotel-Lovina Bali, Keramas - Bali, and Serangan - Bali.
Traveling Circus
As hard as it is to believe, dolphin traveling circuses are a big hit in Indonesia. There are three separate companies running these inhumane operations, much to the delight of the uninformed spectators who pay pennies each to see the dolphins perform.
There are 72 dolphins currently enslaved in Indonesia illegally, many of which are in captivity in these three traveling circuses. The following three separate companies still run traveling dolphin shows on the main Indonesian island of Java: WSI, Taman Safari Indonesia and Ancol.
