Scorpion
Foundation and the Gunung Leuser National Park Authority (GLNP)-Blangpidie
Office, carried out an outreach activity
in the villages of Alue Badeuk and Alue Silaseh, Jeumpa subdistrict in Aceh
Barat Daya (Abdya), Aceh province. During the visit to the villages, the joint team met local community to raise their awareness of the
protection of wildlife in their villages.
Human conflicts
frequently happen in the surrounding area of these two villages where people
use snars to capture large mammals. The illegal hunters often said, they wanted
to capture wild boars which are protected, however, they also snared illegally
some protected animals such as deers and sun bears.
On 16th of
June 2019, two sun bears were snared in these vilages, but it was soon known by
GLNP staff from Blangpidie branch office. The GLNP staff together with the
Wildlife Authority (BKSDA) in Aceh rescued the animals and brought them to Banda
Aceh to care for injury at the legs of the sun bears.
During the visit to
the two villages in October end, the team also monitored illegal ownership of
protected wildlife.
