Approx. 5,000 Illegal Birds On Sale in Karimata Bird Market, Central Java (October 31, 2016)
Posted on 16:59 October 31st, 2016

Animal trade in Karimata bird market in Semarang was rampant recently. After visiting the market, Scorpion Foundation wrote to the head of Wildlife Authority (BKSDA) today (Monday) asking the BKSDA to increase supervision of the market.

When visiting the market last week, Scorpion found an estimated 5.000 animals on sale in this market including various birds, fruit bats, etc.

Regulation of Minister of Forestry no. 447/2003 says, transportation of wildlife must be covered with transportation document/permit (SATS-DN), therefore, the birds on sale in Karimata market are illegal.

In the report to BKSDA Central Java, the Scorpion also included its finding of cruelty to elephants in this zoo where these animals were chained by two legs. Scorpion asked BKSDA Central Java to stop cruelty to elephants in this zoo.

Meanwhile, elephant riding, one of the cruelest animal attraction in the world, still continue in this zoo.
