Forestry Dialogue at the North Sumatra Provincial Forestry Department (September 12, 2024)

The North Sumatra Regional Forestry Forum (Forum Kehutanan Daerah Provinsi Sumatra Utara) carried out a forestry dialogue with various organizations,  including government and non-government organizations,  at the office of Provincial Forestry department in Medan on the 12th of September 2024. The dialogue, which was opened by the head of North Sumatra Provincial Forestry Department, Ir Yuliani Siregar, MAP,  discussed about tenurial issues in various places in North Sumatra.

One of the topics which dominated the dialogue was about land conflicts. There were many questions about indigenous people’s rights and customary land rights. An officer from the MoEF explained that Indonesian laws and regulations recognize the indigenous people’s rights but nothing about customary land rights.

Two resources persons including from AMAN and from North  Provincial Forestry Department.
