Three Elephant Tusk Traffickers are Arrested in Riau, Sumatra (April 10, 2022)

Riau provincial police arrested 3 elephant traffickers in Kuantan Singingi Regency, Riau Province in Sumatra (10/4/2022). Previously, the police had obtained information about the planned sale and purchase transaction.

The police team then moved from Pekanbaru to Kuantan Singingi to conduct field investigations. On Sunday (10/4/2022), the team found a car carrying 3 men with 4 pieces of suspected elephant tusks at Jalan Lintas Taluk Kuantan-Air Molek, Lebuh Lurus village, Inuman subdistrict of  Kuantan Singingi regency.

"After being arrested, the perpetrators respectively with initials YO, IS and AC or AN along with evidence were brought by the police officers to the Riau provincial Police Headquarters in Pekanbaru for further examination," said Police Chief Commissioner, Sunarto on Sunday (10/4/2022).

"The suspects are charged with Article 21 paragraph (2) letters b and d in conjunction with Article 40 paragraph (2) of the Indonesian Law No. 5/1990 concerning the conservation of living natural resources and their ecosystems. The threat to the perpetrators is a sentence of 5 years in prison and a fine of IDR100,000,000 (approximately US$7,000," he concluded.
