The number of illegal bird traders lately increased in Medan and in its surrounding area. Illegal trading of wild birds need to be closed down to prevent decreasing population in the wild. On Sunday November 8, 2015, the wildlife trade monitoring group, Scorpion Foundation found an illegal bird trader displayed about 1000 birds in front of Buddhist Temple at Jalan Imam Bonjol, about 100 meters from Polonia Hotel in Medan.
The birds were sold to the Chinese community who just finished doing prayer at the Buddhist temple. Each bought between 10 to 20 birds at price IDR2,000 (US$0.15) per bird. As soon as they prayed, the birds were released and flew wherever they want.
There are about 1,000 small birds inside two narrow cages on Sunday. The birds consisted of Scaly-breasted Munia or Spotted Munia (Lonchura punctulata), White-headed Munia (Lonchura maja), Chestnut Munia (Lonchura atricapilla), and Black-and-white Munia (Lonchura bicolor).
The illegal birds sale at Jalan Imam Bonjol Medan had been reported (9/11/2015) by Scorpion Foundation to BKSDA in North Sumatra asking to close down the illegal bird trading in Medan.
