To show their gratitude for the relocation of five orangutans that had been held in bad cages in Ragunan Zoo, the SCORPION FOUNDATION have awarded BKSDA Jakarta their first-ever CERTIFICATE OF APPRECIATION (See below)for wildlife conservation.
Director of SCORPION Gunung Gea said, “While we still have concerns for the welfare of all orangutans in Ragunan Zoo, we feel it is important and correct to acknowledge the good work done by BKSDA Jakarta on this occaision.
Ragunan Zoo has over 40 orangutans spread throughout its vast park. Many are still unable to access an outside enclosure each day.
Unable to feel the warmth of the sun on their backs or breath fresh air, they remain locked in tiny dark cells for 24 hours or more. This is totally unaccepable in this day and age.
Gunung Gea continued, “The five orangutans in question now moved elsewhere in the zoo had spent 10-15 years in solitary confinement enduring terrible treatment. There is no excuse for abusing orangutans. We have offered the zoo director our help and we wait for his response. In the meantime we strongly recommend all female orangutans in zoos throughout Indonesia are prevented from having more babies. All our zoos have more orangutans than they can cope with.”
Certificate of appreciation.
