THE WILDLIFE TRADE MONITORING GROUP

The Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group, the Wildlife Authority (BKSDA) Jakarta, and PT Indika Energy today (Tuesday 6 December 2016) relocated six siamang gibbons from Jakarta to Padang, West Sumatra. Their final destination being the Kalaweit Wildlife Rescue Centre.

The six animals were dispatched from Cengkareng airport using a Sriwijaya Air passenger plane. During transport, these animals were accompanied by two staff from the Animal Rescue Center (PPS) Tegal Alur, Mr. Mulyanto and Ms. Buaiyah, and Deputy Director of the Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group, Marison Guciano.

The six gibbons have been in Tegal Alur Wildlife Rescue Centre of the Wildlife Authority (BKSDA) Jakarta for some months. Based on the monitoring by Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group, the six protected animals need intensive preparation before being returned to the wild. Scorpion asked BKSDA Jakarta to jointly translocate these animals to PPS Kalaweit. The request was granted by BKSDA Jakarta.  

"We are hoping that the six animals are able to receive appropriate training and care in Kalaweit, and eventually get the opportunity to return to their wild habitat," said Director of Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group, Gunung Gea.

"Most importantly, the capture and trade of siamang gibbons must be stopped now. Siamangs are protected by Indonesian regulations, and this species is listed by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) as Endangered with a declining population trend," Gunung Gea added.

 According to Gunung Gea, capture and trade of siamang gibbons needs to be stopped in order to reverse the trend of declining populations. For this to happen we need improved law enforcement and habitat protection.
