Protected Species On Sale at Medan Wildlife Markets (August 24, 2015)
Posted on 13:57 August 26th, 2015

Two wildlife markets in Medan (Jalan Merak Jingga and Jalan Bintang) violate government regulation number 7/1999. Nias Parrots (Gracula religiosa robusta) were on sale in these two wildlife markets.

In a visit on Monday (August 24) SCORPION Investigator found Nias Parrots, among many other exotic birds, on sale at these two markets.

The traders in these two markets set the price IDR1,800,000 (US$128) for one parrot. Traders claim their parrots are from Mentawai Islands in West Sumatra.

Conservation agency (BKSDA) in North Sumatra need to carry out regular inspections of the wildlife markets in Medan to ensure that no protected species are traded in the markets.
