On Thursday, May 7, 2020 in the midst of the corona virus outbreak, the Scorpion team together with the FLIGHT team assisted the North Sumatra Law Enforcement agency (Balai GAKKUM) of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) to prevent smuggling of 1,266 birds from Aceh into North Sumatra. The GAKKUM secured the 1,266 pleci birds at a bus station in Medan.
The owner of the birds (RH) is from Takengon, Central Aceh Regency, sending these birds to Medan without being accompanied by a domestic transportation document for plants and animals. The birds are in 30 boxes. A total of 556 birds have died and 710 are still alive.
Head of GAKKUM Office for Sumatra, Eduward Hutapea stressed that the perpetrators of environmental crimes should not take advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic situation to carry out criminal acts. "Don't try to take advantage of the COVID-19 Pandemic situation to commit crimes, because we don't stop monitoring and cracking down on perpetrators of environmental crimes," Edward stressed.
Confiscation of these birds originated from public complaints related to the alleged circulation of protected animals. The Medan Gakkum Sumatra Region Region I Team Medan on May 6, 2020 trailed the PT. Atlas of the Takengon route - Medan City, which is suspected of carrying protected animals, from the border of Aceh-North Sumatra Province. After the bus station the Team ambushed and secured 30 boxes of pleci birds.
