Environment and Forestry Minister (MoEF)'s Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BBKSDA) in North
Sumatra along with Special Crime Unit of North Sumatra Provincial Police Tuesday
morning (19/07/2016) busted trade of 13 pangolins in Medan, North Sumatra
province. The suspects of this illegal trade are still under police
investigation, while the pangolins will be released in a conservation area in
North Sumatra tonight.
Head of BBKSDA in North Sumatra, Dr. Hotmauli Sianturi,
M.Sc told the press Tuesday afternoon that when arrested, one pangolin already
died, while 12 others still alive. All surviving pangolins to be released on a
conservation area in North Sumatra, but she did not mention the name of area to avoid
illegal hunters.
In response to this event, Senior Investigator of Scorpion
Foundation, Marison Guciano appreciates the action of BBKSDA in North Sumatra
that has been taking quick and wise decision to release the pangolins the same
day they are confiscated. "Keeping confiscated animals in BKSDA
office will only lead to the risk of death," Marison Guciano said.
"The action of BBKSDA North Sumatra to release
pangolins the same day they are confiscated is a good example which should be
followed by other BKSDA offices throughout Indonesia. We have often seen bad examples
where animals kept too long resulting in the mass death of animals,"
Marison added.
