Animal lovers community in Tulungagung, East Java province, expressed hope that the Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) provide guidance related to captive wildlife, protected species, and breeding permits for conservation purposes.
"It would be very good if BKSDA is willing to provide guidance to animal lovers community, so we know what animals are allowed to be bred and which ones are not allowed according to prevailing regulations," said Chairman of the Steering Committee Tulungagung Exotic Animal (TEAM), Mr. Bayu Kriswantoro in Tulungagung, on Wednesday (11/11/2015).
He stated, animal lovers community in the area, particularly in Tulungagung, is very open to persuasive approach by BKSDA. According to him, socialisation of the animal protection regulations (by BKSDA), including list of endangered species (appendix), will be used by wildlife lovers as official guidance. Not only in terms of synergies in the protection and preservation of endangered / protected animals, but according to Bayu, all members of TEAM and other animal lovers communities in the region require clear rules and legal procedures of wildlife breeding.
If the regulation is socialized clearly and legal procedures are disseminated openly, according to Bayu, his community would comply with the regulations.
"If it is a must, we are willing to obtain breeding permit and we will voluntarily provide infrastructure for wildlife breeding activities ," he said.
Similar aspiration articulated by another animal lover activist, Mrs. Ida Kurniawati who was also one of TEAM coordinator. According to her, the activities of animal lovers are only for hobby and the love to the wildlife, especially reptiles. If animal is traded, said Ida, it is more on sharing of hobby in the conservation of wildlife in captive breeding.
"If the community has a good will for wildlife conservation by taking care of and breeding of the animals but the law is enforced on us related to the Appendix animals, of course we will continue to be in the position of 'losing' because they are in control of rules," she said.
The BKSDA admitted that his party has made intense approach to those individuals and animal lovers communities in the regions but did not specify what have been done in relation to what the Tulungagung animal lovers community requested related to direct guidance.
Head of BKSDA Area I in Kediri, East Java, Mr. Hadi Suyitno stated that socialization activities are currently concentrated on synergy of supervision with the police, PERHUTANI (State owned Forest Enterprise), and local government. "We have carried out several operations against some owners of protected animals such as Sumatran tiger, crocodiles, and several other endangered species protected under the law. In general, they do not have breeding permits, so we confiscated all the animals we found," he said. (ANTARA)
