On 6 April 2016, the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) was forwarded video footage of a lion cub at member zoo, Taman Safari Indonesia. The lion cub in the video clip seemed to be sedated for a photoshoot with visitors. WAZA is presently conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.
"We are seriously concerned and disturbed by the footage. WAZA in no way condones the sedation of animals for photo-shoots or for animal human interactions of any sort. This is entirely opposed to our Code of Ethics and we are examining all aspects of this story and hope to receive more information very soon." - Dr Gerald Dick, Executive Director, World Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
The WAZA Code of Ethics and Animal Welfare, is a set of basic principles to help members conduct their actions in accordance with our community's values. These values are clearly outlined in the document.
WAZA provides strategic guidance to the zoo and aquarium community on achieving positive animal welfare and conservation. WAZA works closely with zoo professionals and welfare organisations to address matters of concern. This includes issues raised through complaints. WAZA has a formal complaint process.
