Two New Species of Bird are Discovered in Indonesia (June 2, 2018)

The number of bird species found in the world's third largest tropical rain fores (of Indonesia) has increased this year. In 2017 there are 1,769 species of bird species identified in Indonesia and with the new discovery of two more species , the number of bird species in Indonesia in 2018 is 1,771 species.

 

Head of Communication & Institutional Development, Ria Saryanthi said, "One such addition is myzomela rote (Myzomela irianawidodoae), endemic bird of Rote Island in East Nusa Tenggara region described by LIPI in 2017. This bird belongs to the protected Meliphagidae family based on Government Regulation (PP) no. 7 in 1999. This means adding one protected bird species to 436 from the previous 435 species. "

 

With this addition, a typical bird species or endemic from Indonesia that has been identified increased to 513 species. In addition to myzomela rote, a new species of bird that has been identified is paok papua (Erythropitta macklotii). Meanwhile, based on the IUCN Red List, the status of globally endangered birds recorded in Indonesia has changed little. There are three species of birds whose status of threat is now increasing.
