The Scorpion Foundation Welcomes the Decision
of Governor Ahok not to Send Orangutans to North Korea
In an announcement yesterday the Jakarta Governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said there had been widespread concern at orangutans being sent to North Korea, a country that barely feeds its people and the only zoo is said to be full of starving animals.
Scorpion have now dropped plans and
cancelled its application for permission to hold a public protest on this
matter.
Gunung Gea continued, “We know China
also wants orangutans from Indonesia. Chinese zoos are well known for their
cruelty to animals, especially apes, which they dress as clowns and use them in
circus style shows.
It would be a disaster if orangutans
were to be sent to China and we hope Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar will not allow
their export.”
The Scorpion Foundation are now
Indonesia’s leading NGO group campaigning against the illegal wildlife trade
and zoos that treat wildlife cruelly.
