The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) Bengkulu translocated
a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris
sumatrae), victim of conflict in Seluma, Bengkulu, to the Safari Park in
Cisarua, Bogor, West Java. Head of BKSDA Bengkulu, Abu Bakar told the press on Monday
(6th June 2016), the translocation is to ensure the survival of this
critically endangered species which was rescued for attacking rubber farmer in
Seluma. "This decision was taken after a long consideration. Everything is
for the survival of this tiger," Abu stated.
He said the translocation of this male tiger was also to get
treatment from the medical team of Taman Safari. Giring was diagnosed with a
blood parasite disease that requires special treatment from medical team.
"Safari Park has clinics and qualified medical personnel to treat Giring,
so we decided to move Giring to Bogor," he said.
According to Abu, Giring will be at the Safari Park to
complete treatment. The future of this critically endangered species will be
discussed again by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
"Currently the focus is on the treatment. Releasing of
Giring to his habitat will be depending on the decision of the ministry,"
he said.
Giring was evacuated from Seluma area after attacking a rubber farmer to death in February 2015. For 1 year this male tiger was placed in a cage at the BKSDA Office in Bengkulu. Before being translocated to Taman Safari, Giring had previously moved to a larger enclosure in Seblat Elephant Training Centre in North Bengkulu. (Antara).
