When opening this annual meeting, the chairperson of
Scorpion Foundation's Board of Trustee, Nita Yunianti, expressed her hope that
all participants could contribute their thoughts in an effort to help the
Indonesian government save rare and endangered animals.
She said, Sumatera has 2 important landscapes that are very
valuable in the world of conservation, namely Leuser Ecosystem in Aceh and Batangtoru
Ecosystem in North Sumatra.
Leuser is considered very important because the landscape
is the last place in the world where there are still four rare species that are
critically endangered, including the Sumatran orangutan, Sumatran rhinoceros,
Sumatran elephant and Sumatran tiger. Meanwhile, in the Batangtoru landscape,
Tapanuli orangutans and Sumatran tigers are still found beside around 25 other protected
species.
12 representatives participated in the annual meeting. They are consisted of staff members and volunteers of Scorpion Foundation in North Sumatra and Aceh.
