For 4 days, Scorpion Foundation carried out an investigation of possession of
orangutans in Aceh Barat Daya district in Aceh, Sumatra.
The investigation has resulted in finding an orangutan that kept by a woman, Mrs.
Cut Erlita, in Blang Raja village, Babahrot sub-district, Aceh Barat Daya
district of Aceh.
After
identifying the location and name of the owner, Scorpion Foundation and Orangutan
Information Centre (OIC) together with a staff from Natural Resource
Conservation Agency (BKSDA) in Aceh visited the owner of orangutan on Friday (3rd of June 2016) for confiscation mission, but as soon as
she saw the confiscation team, she immediate ran away the orangutan using a motorbike
to an unknown location.
Unable to to talk to the owner, Scorpion together with OIC and BKSDA visited local police to ask for help to meet the owner of the orangutan.
In a meeting with presence of policeman, the owner said, she was not willing to hand-over the
orangutan immediately because the orangutan was already like her own child.
After receiving explanation from the confiscation team that keeping orangutan at home is a violation of law then he finally agreed to hand over the orangutan in 1 month. The agreement signed by Mrs. Cut Erlita.
