Scorpion Foundation insists Director of Biodiversity Conservation
at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) to rescue 4 orangutans from
Kasang Kulim zoo near Pekanbaru, Riau Province in Sumatra.
In a letter to the Director of Biodiversity Conservation today (Monday, 25 April 2016) Scorpion asks the Biodiversity Conservation Directorate to move the 4 orangutans from Kasang Kulim zoo to recue centres for medical check, rehabilitation, and to eventually release to the wild.
Scorpion investigators visited the zoo for several times and found that the condition for the 4 orangutans there were poor. One of the orangutans was placed in a small cage where visitors could make direct contacts and gave junk food to the orangutans without strict supervision from zoo management/staff.
Prior to sending letter to Directorate of Biodiversity Conservation, Scorpin had communicated the issue of the orangutans in Kasang Kuling via cellular phone and sms. Also, on 16th of March 2016, Director of Scorpion Foundation, Gunung Gea, met the Director of Biodiversity Conservation, Bambang Dahono Adji in Jakarta to discuss the issue.
Orangutans are one of our closest relatives, sharing 97% of our DNA. The book “The World is Watching,” (published OCSP/USAID in 2007) describes that loosing orangutan is like loosing a brother
“It is the orangutan’s human characteristics that have driven the huge demand for captive animals in circuses, zoos, safari parks and private collections around the world. But, having destroyed its natural environment, will this great ape’s preservation be simply for cheap attractions and thoughtless entertainment?,” (The World Is Watching, page 3).
