Scorpion Highly Appreciates BKSDA Bengkulu for Prompt Action in Releasing 1,500 Confiscated Birds (August 30, 2016)

Scorpion Foundation highly appreciates the prompt action of BKSDA Bengkulu-Conservation Section Region III Bandarlampung in releasing 1,500 confiscated birds. The birds were confiscated in Bekauheni seaport on Wednesday night (24/8) and they were released the following day (Thursday).

Scorpion Foundation expressed appreciation through email today (Tuesday, 30/08/2016) addressed to the Conservation Section Region III, under BKSDA Bengkulu, in Bandarlampung.

Scorpion Foundation is grateful for the quick action taken by the BKSDA in Bandarlampung because often in these cases confiscated birds experience mass deaths before they can be released. Due to the prompt action by SKW III BKSDA Bengkulu and the Agriculture Quarantine Centre (BKP) in Bandarlampung, the mass death of these birds has been prevented.

The 1,500 birds (kept inside three boxes) were confiscated in Bekauheni while on the way toward Cikokol, Tangerang. "The birds were sent via bus toward Cikokol (in Tangerang) in the form of a package and it was unclear who were the senders and the recipients, therefore, the legal case could not be processed," Karit, one of the forestry policemen in Bandarlampung, told Scorpion foundation via telephone Tuesday afternoon (30/08/2016).

The birds were sent from Pringsewu in Lampung and from Palembang in South Sumatra.

The species of birds rescued included Zebra doves, Bar-winged prinia, Sooty-headed bulbul, Asian glossy starling,  Greater green leaf bird, Yellow-vented bulbul, Long-tailed shrike, and several other species. They were all released in Wan Abdurrahman Grand Forest Park in Bandarlampung.
