Jatinegara Wildlife Market, Jakarta:-

Scorpion Foundation visited Jatinegara wildlife market in Jakarta on the 4th of December 2024 to monitor illegal trade of protected animal in this market. No protected animal was on display in the market but many long-tailed macaques were on sale here.

In 2023, Scorpion Foundation visited this market and found long-tailed macaque babies on sale at the price of IDR1.200,000/head but during this latest visit, the price increased up to IDR2.000,000/head.

According to a trader in Jatinegara, people in Jakarta loved to buy macaque babies for fun to entertain their family members. Meanwhile, many fruit bats were also on sale in this market. People buy fruit bats because some people in Jakarta still believed that eating fruit bat meat can cure asthma.
