Joint Patrol at Gunung Leuser N.P. (June 30, 2018)
Posted on 15:54 July 03rd, 2018

Four rangers from Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) center and from Scorpion Foundation (also known as Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group) carried out a joint patrol at the Simolap forest block of GLNP in Marike, Langkat regency. The rangers consisted of 2 persons from GLNP  (Selamat, and Fitra Jaya Barus) and 2 persons from Scorpion Foundation (Supardi, and Gunung Gea).

The patrol aimed at monitoring human activity at the GLNP but did not find any illegal activity, instead, they found some damaged signboards on the NP border. A local resident, Yanti, told Scorpion in Marike that some orangutans often come out of the NP entering local people plantation.

“Three days ago, I encountered two orangutans come out of the GLNP entering local community plantation,” Yanti said.

The awareness of local people on the importance of protection of wildlife in the GLNP is very good. The patrol team found several signboards with the wording "NO HUNTING (DILARANG BERBURU)."
