The Directorate General of Environmental and Forestry Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) and police busted international syndicate of rare animals in Batam, Riau Island.
The Wildlife Authority (BKSDA) in Jambi and local police confiscated 13 protected cockatoos, 11 birds of paradise
and 1 golden monkey from a trader with initial W. Together with 3 other persons with initial E, B, and T, the trader W were arrested for further investigation by the police.
Director
of Forest Protection and Prevention Sustyo Iriyono at the MoEF told the media
that from the results of the investigation of the MoEF, this trade also
involved perpetrators in Malaysia, so this was an international network.
"We have developed cooperation with Interpol and just last week our team traveled to Malaysia to coordinate and collaborate with Malaysian authorities regarding cases of wildlife smuggling, we will disclose all the actors and networks," Sustyo said on Thursday (21st of February 2019). (PR KLHK)
