Indigenous people in Ramba Sihasur Village, Sipirok subdistrict, South Tapanuli, participated in a training in growing potatoes on November 7, 2022. This activity was organized by the Scorpion Indonesia Foundation to improve the livelihoods of people who live close to the Tapanuli orangutan habitat in the Dolok Sipirok Nature Reserve.
This training was held by inviting an experienced trainer, Mr. Pratama Sipayung, from the Saribu Dolok Farmers’ Group in Saribu Dolok, Simalungun Regency. The Saribu Dolok Farmers Group members have already developed successful potato farming in Saribu Dolok, Simalungun.
The training is filled with several topics such as how to cultivate the land, maintenance, and harvest preparation. Apart from holding training, the Scorpion Foundation also handed over 1,550 kg of potato plant seeds for them to plant on their land in Ramba Sihasur village.
The Scorpion Foundation encourages the community to develop intensive agriculture to reduce their activities looking for a source of income from the forest which is the habitat of the Tapanuli orangutan in Dolok Sipirok Nature Reserve.
