Gembiraloka zoo,
Yogyakarta, has discontinued wildlife attractions in this zoo. A Senior
Investigator from Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group, monitored this zoo on
Sunday (26th of November 2017) and found that the wildlife attractions
such as otters pushing cart, photo session with orangutan, sun bear riding a bike, all have been discontinued. All these cruel
attractions have been changed by a good quality educational activity.
Visitors of this zoo are regularly shown
various species of animals such as orangutans, otters, sun bears, and various species
of bird with explanation from zoo officers about the lives
of each animal in their respective wild habitats, their diets, etc. The
visitors look enthusiastic about this activity as they gain knowledge of the
Indonesian rare animals.
An officer at
Gembiraloka zoo told Scorpion that Gembiraloka Zoo management has stopped
wildlife circus due to many protests
through social media, especially the circus of a sun bear riding bicycle.
Since last year,
Scorpion has monitored this zoo and criticized exploitation of animals
in this zoo including forcing of bear to ride a bike, direct contact with
orangutans during photo session with orangutans. All of these cruel attractions
have now been shifted to an education activity.
