Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group recently investigated wildlife
conditions in Lemah Hijau and conducted a campaign calling for support from
various parties to express concerns about the orangutan and sun bear circus of
the zoo. This approach was quite successful.
After featuring a circus performance of bears
and orangutan
in Lembah Hijau, many Scorpion Facebook visitors sent email to the management
of the Lembah Hijau Zoo. Finally, this zoo discontinued the exploitation of
bear and orangutan at the zoo.
As a follow up of the previous monitoring
and campaign, Scorpion visited the zoo again on Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday
(12,13, and 17 September 2017) and found no more bear circus performance at the
zoo. Then Scorpion asked an officer why no bear and orangutan circus. The officer
said, they had been stopped because of many protests, including from NGOs.
We thank all our FB visitors who supported
Scorpion in the campaigns.
The bear circus video on Scorpion Facebook reached
1,486,990 persons, disseminated by 11,869 persons. The video also received 5,500
reactions, and 1,776 comments. In addition to the video campaigns on FB,
Scorpion also ran a petition
that received media attention. Below are links to media reports:
