Herry Ginting, a wildlife trader in Deli Serdang, North
Sumatra Province, was sentenced to two years in prison by Medan District Court
on Wednesday (January 23). In addition to prison sentence, Herry was also fined
paying 10 million rupiahs (approximately USD7,000). If the fine is not paid, then
he will spend another three months in jail.
Herry was found guilty of violating Law number 5 of 1990
concerning the conservation of natural resources and their ecosystems and
government regulation number 7 year 1999 concerning Preservation of flora and
fauna.
Herry was arrested by forestry policemen along with his animals (four slow lorises, 4 langurs, and 2 long-tailed macaques) in Sibiru-bira . Herry captured these animals in the farming area in Sibiru-biru, Deli Serdang and traded these animals at his home by promoting them on Facebook.
