The Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) West Java chapter today (Tuesday, 1st of March 2016) finally released 213 birds which were confiscated in Merak Port, Banten on Sunday (21/02/2016).
The release took place on Rawa Danau Nature Reserve this afternoon with presence of Senior Investigator from Scorpion Foundation, Marison Guciano.
Since the confiscation, Scorpion Foundation urged all government relevant agencies via emails and phone calls, including quarantine office, Law Enforcement Directorate general at the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, to avoid mass deaths of birds.
The police in Merak Port, Cilegon, Banten province of Indonesia, aborted smuggling of 480 birds from Sumatra to Java. The birds, which had no document at all, were found inside luggage rack of a bus ( Putra Remaja) on the way from Jambi (Sumatra) to Solo (Java).
Some birds are not released for evident in the upcoming legal process of the case.
Scorpion Foundation encouraged government relevant agencies to release the birds as soon as possible because In December 2015, the forest police in East Java confiscated 2,700 birds smuggled from East Kalimantan. Due to slow quarantine process in East Java, most birds died, and only about 10% could finally be released to the wild in East Kalimantan.
