Bengkulu Zoo is Very Depressing (July 25, 2015)
Posted on 17:06 July 27th, 2015

Condition of Bengkulu zoo is very depressing. When visiting this  zoo on Saturday (25/07), investigator from Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group/Indonesian Friends of the Animals (IFOTA) found a lot of garbage on the animal enclosures. A bird was injured but apparently did not receive treatment.

The management of Bengkulu Zoo pays enough attention to the business activities of the zoo through exploitation of the animals to produce money but do not care enough for the animal welfare, for e.g., there is not enough water in crocodile enclosure, then gibbon is placed in a small cage. It is too small for gibbon.

The government conservation agency (BKSDA) Bengkulu should immediately intervene to provide direction and warning to the manager of the Bengku zoo for improvement of animal welfare.
