The Security
and Law Enforcement Agency for environment and forestry crimes at the Ministry
of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) confiscated four protected apes from an
illegal owner in Pekayon village, Pasar Rebo, Jakarta today (11/8). The four
animals consist of 3 heads of Javan leaf monkey (Presbytis comate), and
one Silver leaf monkey (Trachypithecuns auratus).
An officer of the MoEF’s Security and Law Enforcement Agency for Java and Bali, Saptawi Sunarya, told the press that the confiscation was carried out by the agency with support from the local community, the Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group and Jakarta Animal Aid Network (JAAN).
The Director of Wildlife Trade
Monitoring at Scorpion Foundation, Marison Guciano, appeals to those who still
keep protected animals in their homes to immediately hand them over to
government related agencies for rehabilitation and release back in the wild.
