VIVA.co.id: The public recently shocked by the finding of animal lover activist, the Scorpion Wildlife Trade Monitoring Group, related to the elephant chained on legs in Surabaya Zoo, East Java.
It was considered by this animal lover as a form of torture to animal. However, the news was quickly denied by the Surabaya Zoo.
According to the Head of Public Relation at the Surabaya
Zoo, Laily Widya Ari Shandi, the elephant, named Gonzales, was chained on legs because of a lust period.
Because of that, according to Laily, this animal often
behaves hyperactivity. "This male animal often shows anger or insanity, and
is characterized by temporal gland secretions that melts on the cheek, between
the eyes and ears with black color and stimulating smell," he told
Laily continued, the torrid time usually occurs once in 3 to 5 months or as long as between 1 to 4 weeks. "Hence, we chained his legs since last December 26, in order to control the behavior of elephant which tend to be hyperactive and potentially interfere with other elephants and visitors," said Laily.

Trade Monitoring Group, reported that an
elephant in Surabaya Zoo was chained on legs. By doing so, the elephant
movement is very limited and does not have access to food and water. Elephant
enclosure looks very dirty filled with feces and urine.
Elephants were also reportedly showed symptoms of zoochosis, that deviant behavior due to stress in the enclosure.
