NGO’s Raise the Alarm Over Medan Zoo’s Smoking Orangutan (July 13, 2015)

On a recent visit to Medan Zoo an investigator from the SCORPION network, Indonesian Friends of the Animals NGO, saw visitors throwing lit cigarettes to a Sumatran orangutan. The Sumatran orangutan, which is protected species in the Indonesian law and listed as a Critically Endangered species by the IUCN World Conservation Union, picked up a cigarette and proceeded to put it between its lips and inhale.

BKSDA Deaf to NGO’s Illegal Gibbon Alarm Call? (July 17, 2015)

Investigators from wildlife trade monitoring group SCORPION have four times told BKSDA of a Siamang gibbon being held illegally and cruelly outside a military officer’s home in Cibubur, Ciracas sub-district, East Jakarta, but no confiscation has yet taken place. SCORPION’s Senior investigator Marison Guciano said, “We are very worried about the health of this endangered primate and just as worried about our own BKSDA officials doing nothing to help it. If the law is not going to be enforced we will soon have no wild animals left in the wild.”

SCORPION: Eating Fruit Bats Does Not Help or Cure Asthma (July 11, 2015)

Investigators from environmental group SCORPION are increasingly concerned for the future of fruit bats. People are being misled by traders into believing eating fruit bats can cure asthma. This is totally untrue. It won’t help or even cure asthma. People are wasting their money and fruit bats are disappearing from our local environment.

Push to revise conservation law as Indonesians post wildlife crimes to Facebook (July 10, 2015)

The Indonesian government has promised to crack down on the growing number of people showing off dead or abused endangered animals on social media.Several cases have received national attention. In February, residents of the Sumatran village of Sibide posted pictures to Facebook of themselves posing with a dead Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), whose dwindling population in the wild amounts to no more than a few hundred.

Masked Monkey Show Continues Outside Jakarta (July 9, 2015)

In Jakarta, the masked monkey show has been banned, but, outside of Jakarta that show continues. A group of young men performed a masked monkey show on the roadside of Bandar Setia Street, Percut Sei Tuan sub-district, Deli Serdang district of North Sumatra province on Thursday (July 9, 2015).
