Posted on 13:02 June 07th, 2017

The Gunung Leuser National Park (GLNP) Authority held a meeting with representatives of Non-Government Organizations (NGO’s) in North Sumatra and Aceh to discuss synchronization of the park's activities with NGO activities. In the meeting chaired by the Head of GLNP Authority, Mr. Misran, at the GLNP auditorium on Tuesday (6th of June 2017) each NGO explained about their respective activities and plans ahead.

In the opening of the meeting, Head of the GLNP stated that the conservation of four key species (tiger, elephant, rhinoceros, orangutan, would remain a concern of the GNLP. In addition, the status of the GLNP as one of the parks included in the Endangered List, would also remain a concern. Various efforts have been made by GLNP authority to get the park out of list but until now the status has not changed.

Participants of the meeting consist of representatives from World Conservation Society (WCS), VESSWIC, Leuser Conservation Forum (FKL) and Yayasan Eksistem Lestari (YEL), Orangutan Information Center (OIC).

NGO's have expressed their own works and plans ahead in the meeting. Yasra Alfariza of the Conservation Department at the Scorpion Foundation explained that Scorpion would support restoration activities in Gunung Leuser National Park through planting of various sub-species of pig trees. Fruits of these trees are favorite food of orangutans.

Yasra added, for the early stage, Scorpion has produced 1,000 seedlings of pig trees which are now ready to plant. The selection of pig trees aims at supporting conservation of orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park.
